I don't listen to a lot of podcasts but the one podcast I listen to is the feminist podcast Another Round. Tracy Clayton and Heben Negatu are two black feminists are both highly intelligent and hilarious. On their podcast, both women often talk about self- care. You can read about what self-care at this link.
For me, self-care plays a huge important role in my life especially as a single, working woman with no children. It is imperative for people to take care of him or herself which is what Tracy and Heben emphasizes on Another Round which I really appreciate hearing them say. I think it is good to take care of one's body, mind, and spirit, if not one will burn out and end up in not so good of a place. If people do not take care of their body, mind and spirit, it will affect not only them but others around them. When one person is happy, everyone is happy. If one person is upset, everyone is upset.
Even stressful events can affect a person's physical and mental well being, in this case this past week's election. The results of this past Tuesday's election was not one everyone wanted. I had a couple of friends who were beyond devastated. Me? I felt like I was kicked in the stomach several times. To say I was shocked is putting it mildly. As time went on this week, my shock slowly wore off but my anger remained. What has helped me get through my anger and other emotions from Tuesday's three ring circus is listening to music at work and focusing on my job at hand. I found focusing on my job while listening to some politically inspired playlists I created on Spotify acted as a form of therapy for me in some odd way.
Yesterday I decided that this weekend I would go out to my favorite art museum and to Como Park Zoo and Conservatory (with my DSLR camera) as my external forms of self-care. I find doing activities like going to an art museum, movies, parks, or zoos are great stress relievers. Reading and coloring are also my favorite activities that I enjoy that relieves stress. I almost forgot to mention that I love a good hot bath before bed. I like to gather my thoughts at the end of the day with a good hot bath.
I hope in times like Tuesday's election, people will take the time from their day to just chill. Listen to some of your favorite music, turn off all electronic devices, and chill with a good book or mediate. Taking care of yourself is important. No good comes out of ignoring your own well-being and happiness.
